Oscars Reject Volodymyr Zelensky's Request To Speak At The Ceremony

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky has been denied permission to speak at the Oscars for the second year in a row, as per a report in Variety Magazine.

According to the outlet, Mr Zelensky had hoped to participate in the Oscars 2023 broadcast in continuation of earlier cultural appearances, however, the request was turned down. It is to be noted that since the beginning of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, he has been appearing in events like the Grammys, Golden Globe Awards, Cannes Film Festival and Berlin Film Festival via video conference.

The outlet stated that WME power agency Mike Simpson pleaded with the Academy to include the Ukraine President in the show but it was rejected. In 2022, it was reported that Oscars Executive Producer Will Packer was concerned about giving Mr Zelensky airtime because "everyone involved in the conflict is white and previous tragedies involving people of colour did not receive the same level of attention". Instead, there was a moment of silence during the ceremony.

The news follows a recent poll that revealed rapidly declining American support for aid to Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the Academy isn't the only organisation that has turned down the request of Mr Zelensky. He was also denied to speak at the Toronto Film Festival in September. According to a spokesperson, as quoted by the magazine, the festival "does not comment on discussions with dignitaries, government officials or international embassies." The festival "stands in solidarity with Ukrainians both at home and abroad and is proud to showcase the depth and creativity of Ukrainian filmmakers at this year's festival."

In January, Volodymyr Zelensky appeared virtually at the annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony to say that "there will be no third World War" as the tide is changing in Ukraine's ongoing conflict with Russia.

"The first World War claimed millions of lives. The second World War claimed tens of millions of them. There will be no third World War, it is not a trilogy," he said. "It is now 2023; the war in Ukraine is not over yet, but the tide is turning. And it is already clear who will win," Mr Zelensky added.

He concluded, "We will make it together with a whole, free world, and I hope that all of you will be with us on the victorious day - the day of our victory. Slava Ukraini."

Govinda On How Satish Kaushik's Famous Pappu Pager Scene Was Made

Actor Govinda, whose chemistry with Satish Kaushik became famous in the many comedies they featured in the 90s and early 2000s, remembered the actor-filmmaker as someone who improvised a lot before his scenes, often writing dialogues to bring in more laughs.

Govinda, who has acted in many films with Kaushik most notably in Saajan Chale Sasural, Deewana Mastana, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Pardesi Babu, Aunty No. 1, Haseena Maan Jaayegi, and Kyo Kii... Main Jhuth Nahin Bolta among others, remembered him as a great artist.

"When I look back today at all the movies that we acted in together, I feel very sad that we lost him. Every actor acts, but he was someone who would understand things and then perform. (woh samaj ke acting karte thay)," Govinda told PTI.

Kaushik died of a heart attack while he was on his way to a Gurugram hospital in the early hours of Thursday. He was 66. One of the most famous characters from the Govinda-Kaushik films is that of Pappu Pager, a contract killer from the film Deewana Mastana.

The 1997 romantic comedy is directed by David Dhawan and it features Govinda, Anil Kapoor, and Juhi Chawla in pivotal roles. The scene between Govinda, who played the role of Bunnu, and Kaushik's Pappu Pager, whom he contracts to bump off his romantic adversary Raja (Anil Kapoor), has a separate fan following.

Wearing a floral shirt with sunglasses and a pager in his hand, Kaushik stood out in the scene courtesy of his rhyming 'tapori' lingo. Recalling how that scene came to be, Govinda said, "For 'Deewana Mastana', when I went to the set, he had already written (some lines). The scene was a huge hit and is still remembered by fans because we worked on the language of Nagpada (a popular area in South Mumbai), where in every word there is 'na'. We both jointly worked on that scene. He had written his dialogues and I had also written something," Govinda said.

The 59-year-old actor, who is currently in Jaipur, said he is unable to come to terms with the sudden loss of his friend and colleague."There are a lot of artists, who work in filmy 'maahul' but he was an actor, who would make any character memorable with his sheer hard work. He would dive into that world completely and become like that character.

"There are so many actors who play such good roles but how many characters become part of history? The characters played by Satish Kaushik are historic, they are remembered even now and will always be," Govinda added.

Man Does 8,008 Pull-Ups In 24 Hours To Raise Money For Charity

An Australian fitness enthusiast broke the Guinness World Record by performing 8,008 pull-ups in 24 hours in an effort to support a charity that supports 400,000 people living with dementia.

To raise money for the non-profit Dementia Australia, Jaxon Italiano attempted to set the record for the most pull-ups performed by a male in a 24-hour period in Sydney, New South Wales.

Mr Italiano planned to raise $0.66 for each pull-up he would perform, but he ended up raising a staggering $5,914.72.

He said on his fundraising page: "I am aiming to raise $1 for every pull up I manage to do. But I need your help! Please make a donation to support my efforts and help me reach my goal of beating dementia.

"All funds raised will support the work of Dementia Australia to provide vital support services for people living with dementia, their families, and carers. These services include counselling, support groups, education, and training."

He ended his attempt with 3 1/2 hours to spare.

"I had to unfortunately leave the last 3.5 hours unused as I had completely exhausted myself," he said in an Instagram post.

According to the Guinness World Records, Jaxon's feat is even more impressive due to the fact he had to overcome injuries, mental strain, and rhabdomyolysis, a serious medical condition that occurs when damaged muscle tissue releases its proteins and electrolytes into the blood. The condition can be fatal or result in permanent disability.

"I thought it would be a good idea to partner this record attempt with a charity addressing dementia, as this is an illness I have had to work with first-hand when I used to work in a nursing home and something that I think needs more awareness due to its increasing prevalence,"  he said.

Video: US Teens Vandalise Chinese Restaurant, Police Search For Suspects

A group of masked, violent teens enters a Chinese restaurant and vandalises it badly over the weekend, overturning tables and breaking chairs as terrified staff watched helplessly, according to The New York Post.

According to a video shared on Twitter by local activist Yiatin Chu, the wicked hooligans left the eatery in very bad shape. The footage shows full anarchy ensuing inside the restaurant as the masked teenagers flipped tables, flung chairs, and broke dishes, leaving a trail of destruction behind.

"This video is going viral on WeChat. Fish Village, a restaurant in College Point, Qns., was ransacked by a gang of masked kids in hoodies. We've fallen so low that there's no expectation of consequences for this horrific attack on private property," Chu, president of Asian Wave Alliance and a co-founder of PLACE NYC, wrote in the post.

Staff at the Fish Village restaurant in College Point, Queens, say they are worried the violent bunch of teenagers may return. The group of youths rode the elevator three floors up to the building.

"It was a bit frightening. It's getting less and less safe. We have no idea what the cause was, and it was pretty nerve-wracking," restaurant worker Tong Yi Hu told The New York Post in Mandarin on Tuesday.

The members of this gang of masked, vicious young attackers are wanted by the local police.
